News: More space for rivers and floodplains: New funding programme strengthens natural flood protection

With a new funding programme, the Federal Ministry for the Environment is supporting the restoration of floodplains along smaller rivers. The measures are intended to promote natural water retention, reduce flood risks, and at the same time contribute to climate adaptation, biodiversity, and climate protection.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment has launched a new funding programme for the restoration of floodplains along smaller rivers. The aim is to make greater use of floodplain landscapes as natural retention and relief areas. Against the backdrop of increasing heavy rainfall and flood events, such nature-based approaches are becoming increasingly important for climate adaptation.

Intact floodplains can perform valuable functions during high water levels: they create space for rivers, support groundwater recharge, provide habitats for numerous animal and plant species, and contribute to climate protection by storing carbon. Floodplain restoration therefore combines several key aspects of climate adaptation and natural flood protection.

The funding programme highlights the importance of approaching flood and heavy rainfall prevention not only through technical protection measures, but also through the climate-adapted development of landscapes and watercourse areas.
