News: NRW Cleans Up After Heavy Rain – Damage Reported in Several Cities
10. Sep 2025
Cleanup efforts have begun in western North Rhine-Westphalia following extreme rainfall. The hardest-hit areas were Bedburg in the Rhein-Erft district, Mönchengladbach, and Willich in the Viersen district, where entire streets were flooded. In Bedburg, 148 liters of rain per square meter fell within just six hours – more than twice the average amount for an entire month.
Residents had to be rescued from flooded homes, and some were forced to leave their houses temporarily. According to current reports, no injuries have been recorded. In Bedburg, a newly built housing development that was intended to be especially resilient to extreme weather was also flooded. Possible planning errors are now being investigated.
The situation has since eased. While more rain is expected in the coming days, a similarly critical situation like Tuesday’s is not anticipated.
