News: Hesse expands early warning system against heavy rainfall
20. Aug 2025
Following a successful pilot project in the district of Fulda, the German state of Hesse is introducing a digital early warning system for heavy rainfall and flooding in additional regions.
In Fulda, around 200 sensors provide alerts up to 45 minutes before flooding occurs. Similar systems will now be installed in 15 districts and cities, meaning that roughly 42 percent of Hesse’s population will benefit. The state government is investing more than ten million euros in the rollout. In the event of an emergency, citizens receive push notifications or automated calls via a free app, while authorities and emergency services are alerted in parallel. Digital Minister Kristina Sinemus (CDU) emphasized that the project demonstrates how digitalization can help protect both lives and property.
