Meyer, H., Johann, G., & Evers, M. (2024). Adaptive capacity of homeowners in Ghana to improve technical and social flood resilience. International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, 114(2):104953

Increasing resilience to flooding requires the implementation of structural and non-structural measures by homeowners. Analysing the technical and social capacities of homeowners helps to understand how well prepared a system is and what specific measures should be taken. The study aims to identify the social and technical capacity aspects of homeowners in Ghana, West Africa, in order to effectively improve their resilience. As part of the PARADeS project, a household survey was conducted in three study areas (Accra, Kumasi and White Volta), in which 1,168 homeowners participated. The results provide insights into the high risk perception and motivation of the respondents, the significant challenges they face in coping with floods, existing knowledge gaps regarding effective measures and the heterogeneous implementation barriers and support needs in the region. Based on the findings, the practical implications, actionable measures and sustainable strategies that can be put into practice with the FLOODLABELGHANA resilience-building tool are discussed.
